Hebrews 6:1-2
1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
2 of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment
John the Baptist came preaching repentance, announcing the coming of the Kingdom of God, and baptizing people in the Jordan.
John the Baptist said two primary things about Jesus:
1) John 1:29
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
2) John 1:32-33
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.
33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Commands the Baptism of Disciples:
Matthew 28:9
9 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Acts 1:5, 8
5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
The believer is three parts and thus there are really three baptisms that can be spoken of:
1) Spirit Man Baptism
1 Corinthians 12:13 - For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body
Ephesians 1:13 - having believed you were sealed with the Holy Spirit...
2) Soul Man Baptism
Ephesians 5: 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, The first filling of many is a baptism of the Spirit
3) Natural Man Baptism- baptism of our bodies in water as an outward sign of an inward reality
Acts 8:38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for you by promise of Jesus:
Acts 2:37-39
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
