Psalm 22:3
3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
This is a bold adaptation of a common phrase in the Old Testament.
2 Samuel 6:2 (ESV)
2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim.
Psalm 80:1 (ESV)
1 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.
David proclaims that the place of the Lord’s enthronement, His authoritative transforming and healing rule, is in the midst of the praises of His covenant people.
It is striking to observe where this verse is in the Bible.
Psalm 22 is called the “Psalm of the Cross”.
It begins with:
Psalm 22:1-2 (ESV)
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.
In the middle is:
Psalm 22:16-18 (ESV)
16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—
17 I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
It ends with:
Psalm 22:30-31 (AMPC)
30 Posterity shall serve Him; they shall tell of the Lord to the next generation.
31 They shall come and shall declare His righteousness to a people yet to be born—that He has done it [that it is finished]! {John 19:30}
Following some of the most despairing words from humanity is:
Psalm 22:3 (ESV)
3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
Enthroned: to sit with authority
