Notes

After I was first saved in 1977 and began to read my Bible deeply, I was drawn to a unique character who has very little written about him.

Enoch is only mentioned in five verses in the whole Bible. Yet he is one of the most unique and significant characters in all of scripture.

The Lord has recently been drawing me back to this initial highlighting of Enoch in my spiritual life some 40 years ago.

I personally long to be part of, and hope to see, what I call an Enoch Generation.

Genesis 5:1-24 (ESV)
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
2 Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.
3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters.
5 Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.
7 Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.
8 Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.
10 Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
11 Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.
13 Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.
14 Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.
16 Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters.
17 Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.
19 Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.
22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

In the midst of a genealogy that is emphasizing birth, living, children, and death is a radically unique character whose narrative is profoundly different than the rest of Adam’s descendants.

Three Primary Differences:
1) All of them “lived life” while Enoch “walked with God”.
Genesis 5:22 (ESV)
22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

2) All of them died while Enoch was taken by God without dying.
Hebrews 11:5 (ESV)
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.

3) He was a Prophet proclaiming the words of God.
Jude 14-15 (ESV)
14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones,
15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Unique Dynamics of an Enoch Generation
Enoch was a prophetic type of a coming generation that would be “walking in the Presence of God” and “prophesying the words of God” - the Church!

The outstanding reality of Enoch’s walk with God was FAITH.
Hebrews 11:6 (ESV)
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)
7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.

In the midst of generations of sight bound men Enoch arises to operate with a whole other set of spiritual faculties by faith

He lives in the visible realm but his primary reality was in the invisible realm.

2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV)
18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Summing Up
In a general sense Enoch stands as a type of the whole church that by believing has escaped death!

John 5:24 (ESV)
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

But in a specific sense he stands for a “7th” and last generation in the earth who will see the Lord’s coming and be “taken away”.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 (ESV)
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Personally, though no one can know for sure, I believe that the “Enoch Generation” is upon the earth.

This generation will be leaders in the House of Prayer Cultural Revolution that WILL manifest in the Church and stimulate the Lord’s coming.

Either way, this amazing Biblical Character, Enoch, is there to:
1) inspire our hearts to a deeper faith walk with God that brings pleasure to His heart
2) bring attention to the Presence and Prophetic filled life of a believer
3) proclaim our ultimate the victory over death through faith in the Resurrected Christ
