The Fragrance of UNITY

Jumping off from where he left off last week (…”that the saints be encouraged in heart…”), Jonathan teaches through the second part of Paul’s prayer for the Colossians (that they would be ...“united in love”). What does unity in the Church smell like? Then - using truths from a Hollywood flick :)  - he unpacks the power of unity and the attack against it. The oil of unity is poured out in the context of warfare and pain! We are contending for miracles, signs and wonders - and the greatest of all will be unity in the Church!

Notes

“Our real selves are all waiting for us in Him.”
- CS Lewis

“You only reach your true identity once you are merged with another Person.”
- Oswald Chambers

Unity = the quality or state of not being multiple. Oneness.

Exodus 30:22-33 (NIV)
22 Then the Lord said to Moses,
23 “Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus,
24 500 shekels of cassia—all according to the sanctuary shekel—and a hin of olive oil.
25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil.
26 Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law,
27 the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense,
28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.
29 You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.
30 “Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.
31 Say to the Israelites, ‘This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come.
32 Do not pour it on anyone else’s body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred.
33 Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.’”

Psalm 133:1-3 (NIV)
1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe.
3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.

Ephesians 4:1-7 (NIV)
1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

Unity Smells Like Perfume

You Cannot Contain The Fragrance of Unity

Warfare Surrounding Unity:
- Impatience
- Hopelessness
- Doubt / Distrust
- Accusation
- Unbelief
- Giving Up

1 John 2:9-11 (NIV)
9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.
11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

1 John 4:20-21 (NIV)
20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.
21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

1 John 5:1-2 (NIV)
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.
2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.

Context & Situation for Anointing Oil Poured Out:
- Trial, Difficulty, Pain, Relational Friction

God’s “outs” (Romans 12:18)
1) If it is Possible
2) As far as it depends on you
3) Live at peace with everyone

Romans 12:18 (NIV)
18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone
