Jonathan picks up where he left off in last week’s teaching on prayer. This week he starts in Hebrews 2 and shows how the Lord is bringing many sons to glory through suffering that helps expose our deepest fears. Psalms 112 says “The righteous man does not fear bad news”, so why do we fear bad news? Let us learn to trust the Lord as our ONLY secure place!

Pray! Standing against Fear

Believing is the condition for receiving

Hebrews 2:10 (NIV)
10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.

Completion How? Through suffering.

Revealing what was previously unseen

Prayer #2 leaning into trouble when it comes

Psalms 112:6-8 (NIV)
6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.
7 They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

Heart response #1 natural (fear)
Heart response #2 supernatural (faith)

We “lean in” through prayer for deliverance

Bad news exposes my heart’s lack of trust in God‘s goodness
Bad news exposes my false walls of security, safety, and protection from disaster

Trusting in Him is our ONLY secure place!

Learn to draw on the grace of God NOW

When bad news comes, what do we do?

James 1:2-6, 12 (NIV)
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

James 1:2-6, 12
1) consider it joy (not misery)
2) let, allow, lean into patience (not resist its work)
3) ask to receive (do not stay silent)
4) Believe (do not doubt)
5) persevere (do not quit)

Psalms 34:2-9 (NIV)
2 I will glory in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.

Fear the Lord and you will not fear bad news

Sons walk in freedom

Romans 8:21 (NIV)
21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

Do not let Satan steal your song of joy today
