All Scripture is God breathed! Today, Satan’s attack on the Word of God is the same as it was in the garden; “Did God really say…?” Jonathan teaches through the old and new Testaments about the power and authority of the living words of God. Ending in Luke 24 we see how Jesus is the key to unlocking the Scripture. He opens our eyes, hearts and minds!

The Holy Scriptures:

- Are able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. They are God-breathed, useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that we may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:15-16)

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (NIV)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

- Are our life (Deuteronomy 32:46-47)

Deuteronomy 32:46-47 (NIV)
46 he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law.
47 They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

- Are our food (Matthew 4:4)

Matthew 4:4 (NIV)
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

- Must be listened to (Luke 16:29-31)

Luke 16:29-31 (NIV)
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

- All testify about Jesus (John 5:39-40)

John 5:39-40 (NIV)
39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,
40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

- Must be believed (John 5:46-47)

John 5:46-47 (NIV)
46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.
47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”

- Cannot be broken (John 10:35, Matthew 5:18)

John 10:35 (NIV)
35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside—

Matthew 5:18 (NIV)
18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

- Are living (Acts 7:38, Hebrews 4:12)

Acts 7:38 (NIV)
38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

- Were given through angels (Acts 7:53, Galatians 3:19)

Acts 7:53 (NIV)
53 you who have received the late that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.”

Galatians 3:19 (NIV)
19 Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.

- Are our source of reason & logic (Acts 17:2)

Acts 17:2 (NIV)
2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

- Should be received & examined (Acts 17:11)

Acts 17:11 (NIV)
11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

- Grows, increases and spreads widely and grows in power/prevails (Acts 19:20)

Acts 19:20 (NIV)
20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

- Teach us endurance, they provide encouragement, and give us hope (Romans 15:4)

Romans 15:4 (NIV)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

- Should be read publicly (1 Timothy 4:13)

1 Timothy 4:13 (NIV)
13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.

- Were written by men carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21)

2 Peter 1:20-21 (NIV)
20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.
21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, through human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

BUT

- Can only be OPENED to us by/through Jesus (Luke 24:25-27, 31, 32, 45)

Luke 24:25-27, 31, 32, 45 (NIV)
25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that then prophets have spoken!
26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”
27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.
32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

“Open"
- To open by dividing
- To open thoroughly (what is closed)
- A firstborn male (opening the womb)

Jesus Opens
- Eyes (v31)
- Hearts (v32)
- Minds (v45)

1. Nothing to do with your intelligence. Everything to do with your availability.
2. Nothing to do with your self-control. Everything to do with your will.
3. Nothing to do with your perfection. Everything to do with your obedience.

Who will pick up the sword and fight?

Psalm 119:18 (NIV)
18 Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
