Jonathan teaches through the continuation of lessons from the past few weeks concerning overcoming despair. We must learn to abide in our position as sons, as the 2nd Adam did, being led forth by the Spirit of God. Sonship began in the garden, was lost at the fall, and was then purchased for us by Christ who was born under the law.  Now the Spirit groans “Abba Father” within us, (Galatians 4) and we too groan with Him “Abba Father”.  Drew and Jonathan finish by sharing two dreams about the revelation of sonship.

Notes

Luke 3:38-4:1 (NIV)
38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
4:1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Sonship began in the garden
1) relationship
2) approval

After fall
1) approval
2) relationship

Genesis 4:6-7 (NIV)
6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Under law

Restoration in Christ - adoption as sons

Galatians 4:4-7 (NIV)
4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.
6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”
7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Spirit Cries Abba

Romans 8:15-17 (NIV)
15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

We cry Abba

Jeremiah 31:8-9 (NIV)
8 See, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the ends of the earth. Among them will be the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor; a great throng will return.
9 They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

Isaiah 43:5-8 (NIV)
5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
8 Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf.
