Picking up where he left off last week, Jonathan teaches about the Queen of Sheba taking great effort to honor Solomon - "and now”, Jesus says in Matthew 12, “something greater than Solomon is here". Examining several chapters of Proverbs and then 1 Peter 5 we see that humility and teachability are essential to a walk of faith and protection from the enemy.

Humility & Fear of the Lord - Interchangeable

Matthew 12:42 (NIV)
42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

Primary Thought Throughout Proverbs = Teachability

IF:
Proverbs 1:22 (NIV)
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
THEN:
Proverbs 1:23 (NIV)
23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.

Three Conditions:
Proverbs 2:1-6 (NIV)
1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 3:7 (NIV)
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.

DO NOT BE WISE IN YOUR OWN EYES

All who are truly wise are not wise in their own eyes

The Fall - made us Self Centered
The Cross - Decentralizes us

God’s Goal For Your Life? Reducing “You”

“Every step on the pathway of spiritual progress will be marked by the bloody footprints of wounded self love”
- Alexander Maclaren

Proverbs 4:7 - Beginnings of Wisdom - “I NEED it because I LACK it”

Proverbs 4:7 (NIV)
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Embrace Childlikeness - "The Way To Life"

Proverbs 6:20-23 (NIV)
20 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
23 For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,

Proverbs 10:17 (NIV)
17 Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Proverbs 19:20, OR Proverbs 19:27
Proverbs 19:20, 27 (NIV)
20 Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.
27 Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Proverbs 26:1-12 (NIV)
1 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.
3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools!
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.
6 Sending a message by the hands of a fool is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison.
7 Like the useless legs of one who is lame is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
8 Like tying a stone in a sling is the giving of honor to a fool.
9 Like a thornbush in a drunkard’s hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.
10 Like an archer who wounds at random is one who hires a fool or any passer-by.
11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.
12 Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them.

1 Peter 5:5-8 (NIV)
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

Submit Yourselves
Clothe Yourselves
Humble Yourselves

Why? Because Attack Is Coming
