Jonathan continues on with his series on prayer with a recap of the words from the past couple months, and then teaches about the authority and rule of God exercised in our prayer. We, like David and Jesus, fulfill the roles of kings & priests on the earth. We, like Adam, are called to rule and reign and as priests we offer sacrifices of prayer and worship. The scepter of Jesus extends out from heavenly Zion - where we have already come! May the kingdom of God explode and expand through us!
Recap of last few sermons
Psalm 2:1-12 (NIV)
1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.”
4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6 “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father.
8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
- Satan has “kings”
- God has “My King” who rules from Zion
“Prayer is the one, prime, eternal condition by which the Father is pledged to put the Son in possession of the world.” - E. M. Bounds
Psalm 110:1-7 (NIV)
1 The Lord says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!”
3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way, and so he will lift his head high.
- Kings – exercise authority and rule
- Priests - offer sacrifices to God
Isaiah 9:7 (NIV)
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
David, a type of Jesus
- A king ruling and reigning from Zion, subduing his enemies
- A priest, in the order of Melchizedek
- Arranging priests and Levites into divisions
- Regular Prayer and Worship established
Result = extension of his powerful kingdom from Zion
United Northern and southern kingdoms and expanded borders of Israel from 6,000 mi.² to 60,000 mi.²
Jesus, son of David, the king and priest extended his rule and reign into the heart of mankind, thereby transforming the world
We, like David and Jesus, are kings and priests
- intercession and worship
- ruling and reigning in his authority on the earth
Hebrews 12:22-24 (NIV)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,
23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,
24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
Prayer is the force that shapes the world.
