An Invitation and a Warning from the Son of Man

Mark 8:34-38 (ESV)
34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. 
36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
37 For what can a man give in return for his soul? 
38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Psalm 2:1-3 (ESV)
1 “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us."

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV)
3 “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

Matthew 24:10-12 (ESV)
10 “And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another.
11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.”

2 Thessalonians 2:3 (NKJV)
3 “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,”

The words in Mark tell us how to persevere in this age and generation of “falling away”.

Note the words: “If anyone”, because these words are for everyone everywhere in every generation until Jesus returns. 

Three-Fold Call:
1) deny him/her self
2) take up his/her cross
3) follow me
